Diocese of Virginia Summer Youth Opportunities

Summer Camps

Greetings Youth Leaders!

I hope this message finds you well and 2018 is off to a great start! I wanted to pass on a couple exciting opportunities for your high school aged youth who might be looking for some spiritual/church related experience this summer, good chance I have just the thing! Check out the three listed below and if you end up sending one of your youth on one of the first two, let us know! We'd love to learn more about these two rich programs and get more youth to go in the future......

"Convergence: Where Faith and Science Meet" is a 9-day program (June 23-July 1, 2018) that allows rising 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students to come to Randolph-Macon's campus in Ashland, Virginia and learn about the intersection of science and faith in the classroom and through hands-on experiences. They will dive deeper into their faith, deeper into the study of science, and meet other high school students and Randolph-Macon College student counselors with those same interests. The cost to participate is only $100 for this 9-day program. Upon high school graduation, if a Convergence participant chooses to attend Randolph-Macon, they will receive a $1,000 scholarship for each year they participated in Convergence.

Feel free to visit the website to learn more. If you would like to nominate a participant, you can click here to fill out the nomination form, and the Convergence staff will contact your nominee with further information.  The application form for participants is available here.

SUMMA Student Theological Debate Society is inviting high school students entering grades 9-12 in the fall of 2018 to apply for SUMMA Debate Camp, held July 17-25 at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee. SUMMA Camp is a unique opportunity for students to explore their faith through intellectual channels, meet lifelong friends, and have a lot of fun on one of the most beautiful college campuses in the country!

At SUMMA Camp, students of all faiths learn valuable skills for debate, public speaking, and theological reflection.  No previous debate experience or formal theological study is necessary. Campers have a true collegiate experience, but camp is not all work! There is plenty of time left over to swim, play sports, watch movies, go bowling, and have lots of great, summer fun!  For more information and to apply, visit summa.sewanee.edu.

Last but certainly not least, Senior High Youth Conference at Shrine Mont Camps! Senior High Youth Conference or SHYC is open to rising 9th -12th graders and runs from July 15th-22nd. From our camps website: "SHYC is a camp for high school aged youth focused on giving back to the community.  The theme is "be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only" (James 1:22).  Expect to challenge and stretch yourself physically and spiritually while having a ton of fun and hanging out with awesome people!  This a great camp for those wishing to grow as leaders.  Bible study, helping others, dance parties and much more will happen during your week at SHYC!" That's all for now, be on the lookout for more updates about all things diocesan youth ministry as we get closer to the Spring. I put a reminder at the bottom of this message about upcoming PYM dates so be sure to mark your calendars if you haven't already. Enjoy the long weekend everyone!
